HOW FFC RICERCA
PROJECTS ARE SELECTED

Peer Review

To date, the Foundation has invested 42 million euros to fund 510 research projects and services, involving a network of over 205 laboratories. Recognized by the international scientific community, FFC Ricerca pursues its strategic mission: “A Cure for Everyone”.

The evaluation process of FFC Ricerca project proposals

  1. Administrative verification of documentation completeness: incomplete or poorly documented proposals are rejected.
  2. Verification by the Foundation’s Scientific Directorate: projects are checked for consistency with the Foundation’s mission (projects aimed at CF therapies) and for compatibility with the research areas specified in the call for proposals.
  3. Initial evaluation by the FFC Ricerca Scientific Committee based on ten criteria: creativity and originality, potential value for developing new knowledge, possible clinical impact, appropriateness of study design, support from preliminary results, reliability of methods, feasibility within the research context, feasibility within the proposed timeframe, adequacy of the requested financial resources, and clarity and completeness of the presentation. Each Committee member evaluates every project and provides recommendations either for forwarding the project to external referees or for its rejection.
  4. Each project approved by the Committee is then submitted to evaluation by a panel of expert referees, preferably international, to minimize potential conflicts of interest. The referees prepare a detailed critical review and a concise evaluation form, using the same criteria adopted by the FFC Ricerca Scientific Committee.
  5. The Scientific Committee meets in early July for a plenary session during which all projects are discussed, taking into account the comments from the international referees. Based on this, a ranking list of projects is drawn up according to their scientific merit. The Committee carefully reviews the project budgets and may request a reduction or reallocation of the original funding request.
On the basis of this ranking and the financial resources previously approved by the Foundation’s Board of Directors, the Scientific Committee proposes the list of projects deemed worthy of funding.
