Stem cell-based therapy is a potential approach for several incurable diseases. This project aims to evaluate the biological and therapeutic properties of a MAB (mesoangioblasts)-based cell therapy for CF disease. It is based on transplantation of MABs in mouse models of CF. Researchers’ previous data have shown that mouse MABs express low levels of functional CFTR and, most importantly, when systemically transplanted in F508del CFTR mice, are able to engraft overtime the epithelium of lung, trachea and intestine even contributing to the epithelial tissue regeneration. Now, the aim is to increase MAB engraftment to a therapeutic level in terms of both time lasting and percentage and to study their ability to make new epithelium. A general amelioration of the CF disease in terms of reduction of local inflammation together with rescue of physiological parameters will be evaluated.
