Researchers demonstrated the possibility of monitoring the inflammatory response in an IL-8 transgenic wild type and CF (CFTR-knock-out) non-invasive animal model in the FFC#18/2013 project. Experimental support has been provided for the proposal that azithromycin (AZM) acts by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial metalloproteases (MPs) and thus causing a mitigation of the lung inflammation. Now, taking advantage from this CF mouse model, the aim is to analyze the possible anti-inflammatory activity of other antibiotics with mechanism of action similar to AZM and other chemical compounds acting as inhibitors of human metalloproteases.
