Cystic fibrosis (CF) can have a significant impact on mental health. International studies, such as TIDES (The International Depression Epidemiological Study), have shown that adolescents and adults with CF experience anxiety and depression, with rates 2-3 times higher than those observed in the general population.
These findings led to the development of specific mental health guidelines, introducing prevention, screening, and treatment procedures for adolescents and adults with CF.
The TIDES study did not include children under the age of 12. In addition, with the introduction of CFTR modulators such as Kaftrio/Trikafta, concerns have also arisen about potential neuropsychological side effects. This led to the launch of TIDES 2.0, aimed at extending the focus on mental health to younger children in the United States, Europe, and now Italy.
Within this framework, the MindKids-CF strategic project addresses children with CF in Italy, specifically those aged 2 to 11. Around 500 children will be enrolled across 11 CF Italian Centers. The study will assess the presence of anxiety, depression, and behavior problems, identify simple and effective screening tools, and investigate possible side effects associated with modulators.
The initiative will deliver two key innovations: a new checklist to record and monitor neuropsychological effects of modulators, and a screening toolkit to be distributed free of charge to all CF Centers in Italy. These resources will help clinicians and families detect psychological problems early, implement targeted interventions, and improve the daily functioning and quality of life of children with CF and their parents.
Addressing mental health is essential to ensure that people with CF receive truly comprehensive care.
