Developed skills and lines of research
Federico Rea graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1982 at the University of Padua. In 1987, he completed his specialization in Thoracic Surgery at the University of Padua. He has always been interested in lung transplantation, attending the Lung Transplant Program at Toronto General Hospital in Toronto, Canada, under J. D. Cooper in 1989 and the Barnes Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis, USA, under G. Patterson in 1994.
A thoracic surgeon and lung transplant specialist, he has performed 4,000 surgeries and over 200 lung transplants as the primary surgeon. His main interests include lung transplantation, particularly for CF patients, tracheal surgery, bronchoplastic procedures, lung cancer surgery, and minimally invasive thoracoscopic and robotic surgery.
Prof. Rea has conducted clinical and research activities at the Thoracic Surgery Division in Padua, first as a hospital assistant and later as a university researcher. Since 2006, he has been a Full Professor of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Padua. Since 2011, he has been the Director of the Thoracic Surgery Division and the Head of the Lung Transplant Center at the University Hospital of Padua. In the CF field, he coordinates a project aimed at early recognition of rejection following bilateral lung transplantation.
