Marco Rinaldo Oggioni is Professor at the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology of the University of Bologna (Italy) associated with RESTORE (REsearch on Tissue and Organ REgeneration), IRCCS Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria and Emeritus Professor, College of Biological Sciences, University of Leicester (UK).
His main area of research interest focuses on the interaction of pathogenic bacteria with the host that could lead to new treatment options. Most recent contributions are the elucidation of the initial phases of systemic bacterial infection through techniques which not only elucidate concepts of host-species-specific infectious disease potential of bacteria, but also human-specific management of bacterial clearance by splenic macrophages.
Additional research interests include the investigation into phase variable epigenetic control in bacteria and the molecular determinants of antimicrobial drug resistance.
