Objectives

Fourier Decomposition is a novel Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FD-MRI) method that allows obtaining perfusion and ventilation images without intravenous and gaseous contrast agents. FD-MRI could provide new outcomes measures for the monitoring of Cystic Fibrosis Lung Disease. Before introducing FD-MRI in CF clinical practice, researchers need to validate this technique against standard as Computed Tomography (CT) and perfusion MRI techniques. The final goal of this validation plan is to develop an MRI protocol that provide information about ventilation, inflammation, perfusion and structure (VIPS-MRI) in a single examination of 30 minutes. To validate the new technique 80 patients with CF scheduled for their periodical CT will be asked to participate. Participation will entail an MRI study, performed the same day of the CT or within a week. Primary parameters obtained by the different techniques and measuring ventilation and perfusion will be assessed and compared using appropriate statistic tests. The new VIPS-MRI protocol may improve detection and quantification of structural and functional changes in the CF patients.
