Resolvin D1 (Rv D1) is a member of the family of resolvins, resolution-favouring endogenous molecules that have entered clinical trials for the treatment of other inflammation-related diseases. The tested hypothesis was that RvD1 represents potent drug that blocks excessive lung-damaging inflammation and potentiates actions of antibiotics. Researchers used a preclinical model of CF – a CFTR-deficient mice – infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and treated with RvD1. Airway inflammation, damage, and infection were assessed after short and medium-long term treatment with RvD1. Also, combined treatment of RvD1 with sub-optimal doses of leading anti-PA antibiotics was explored to determine whether RvD1 boosts immune defences against chronic infection and increases the effects of antimicrobials. The aim was to assess actions of RvD1 in preclinical models of CF, providing proof of concepts for future clinical studies on RvD1 in CF patients.
