The search for new antimicrobial agents is exploring new strategies, aimed at the identification of new targets involved in the production of virulence factors and in resistance mechanisms, such biofilm formation. It was shown that molecules of the antimetabolite class, which interfere with nucleotide synthesis, have an unexpected potential as inhibitors of virulence factors in P. aeruginosa. Researchers proposed to evaluate the ability of some antimetabolite drugs to block P. aeruginosa infections. Three antimetabolite compounds able to inhibit Pseudomonas biofilm formation had been already identified, since they were tested on a panel of 25 strains of P. aeruginosa isolated from CF patients; further experiments were carried out in a simple animal model of infection, represented by the Galleria mellonella wax moth.
