Lactoferrin (Lf), an iron-chelating glycoprotein of the innate immunity of human secretions, exerts anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. However, in airways secretions, human and bacterial proteolytic enzymes may reduce Lf activity. The project FFC#16/2014 has been granted as pilot study to investigate the efficacy of bLf administered by aerosol on acute or chronic airways P. aeruginosa infection in mouse model and to prepare bLf-loaded nanoparticles resistant to microbial and host proteases. To protect bLf against bacterial and human proteolytic activity, bLf-loaded liposomes were prepared. The aim of this project is to confirm in CF preclinical mouse models the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities of aerosol administration of bLf and to demonstrate the efficacy of aerosol administration of bLf-liposomes.
